Fashion Photographer DC

Advertising and Product Photography.

As a professional DC photographer I shoot quite a bit of advertising and marketing images for business in the Washington DC area. They get used for advertising, marketing campaigns and collateral images. Shooting photography for Karyn Grande and TJP Communications out of San Francisco in Laurel Maryland. The client makes under the skin glucose sensors, the main use of this shoot is to produce product lifestyle images. Two days of shooting, the first day was photographing instruments, the second day shot more like Fashion Photography we shot the sensors with and without a model.  Great weather conditions for the second day, bright bright sky-which of course wasn’t good-so we shot the model advertising images in the garage bay, then it poured-really poured, that turned out to be a good thing. Here are a few sample images.

Construction Photography Washington DC Baltimore

Professional photography for general contractors, construction companies and builders

I shoot construction photography for clients on the East Coast of the United States. I enjoy it, Everyday is different, construction photography especially so. Big dirt piles, mile high cranes, ladders, trucks and bulldozers, lot’s of noise, what’s not to like? This job is unique, I’m shooting for a couple of reasons, they are employing cutting edge techniques designed for the site which the client wants documented. They also want some high end marketing photography to advertise their concrete division. Most construction companies advertise what they build, that makes sense. Buildings are their product. It can be hard to show specifically what makes a quality building. Photograph the building in the best light possible, but don’t forget to highlight the quality people that built that building. Leave them out, you leave out a lot.

Architecture Photographer in Washington DC Dulles Airport

Dulles Airport Architecture

Architecture photography for Atlanta based Concessions International here at Dulles Airport at Bar Symon and DC Craft. I had the opportunity to shoot a few other places too. Concessions operates three restaurants at Dulles, I’ve photographed for them at National Airport, which of course is beautiful, but Dulles is a real treat. Designed by architect Eero Saarinen, the inside has been updated since the last time I was there. I wasn’t there to shoot architecture but its something I love to do and on my way out, I managed to spend about 5 minutes in the $385 million dollar train station of the Dulles terminal built by Turner Construction, its pretty cool you can see the images below. By the way, if you find yourself in the terminal at Dulles, eat at Bar Symon- you won’t be disappointed.

Interior Photography World Bank in Washington DC

This is the second time I’ve shot photography at the World Bank in Washington DC. If you have never  seen it, I hope you get the opportunity. It’s has a magnificent massive treed courtyard with a stream running beneath a towering glass ceiling like something out of Kublai Khan’s Xanadu. Workers on each floor peer down from high above while taking in the expansive view. My client installs audiovisual software and hardware at many locations around DC.

Interior and Advertising Images

My client is in the process of renewing their website and they need marketing images that document  the work they have completed. We shot in two different locations, the first being a conference room where AV had installed screens microphones and a control room The second location was a large hall and stage, where my client installed the camera system.

Corporate Photography and Employee Photography Washington DC

Corporate Advertising photographer in Washington DC

I’m a Corporate Photographer in Washington DC. Yesterday I shot some new marketing images at Inova hospital for S2N Technology Group, a subsidiary of Clark Construction. They install communication and healthcare technology for hospitals. S2N is a small but fast growing company that needs marketing, advertising and collateral images for their marketing department . Even though I arrived at 5:30, getting set up to shoot took sometime, the only available garage is far from the shooting location and when I arrived they were down to one construction elevator. The plan for shooting was pretty loose, grab their folks and start shooting when you can, which to be honest is the way I shoot most of the time anyway. After a fascinating safety meeting, I got started shooting at about 10. Everyone was a really big help, without it I might not have got much done with people spread up and down ten floors of construction. We shot on 4 or 5 different floors with a couple of mono lights on stands. The packing up and moving of equipment chews up a lot of time but moving locations in this case was pretty worthwhile and with literally everyone’s help at S2N, I felt we got some good images.

Headshot and Executive Images Washington DC

I shoot headshot photography on location for clients all over the DC area. If you are looking for a creative photographer who can provide images that stand apart from the others. These headshot images are from a recent photography shoot in Baltimore for Security Evaluators. They provide security analysis for software companies across the country. As a group they are a bright young group of ex hackers whose job it is to hack clients software discovering and fixing weaknesses they uncover. They are a pretty individualistic, smart group of people and capturing their headshots and portraits was a lot of fun. No surprise they wanted their images to reflect the uniqueness and individuality each person brings to the company. After deciding on black and white portrait photography, we shot all the portrait headshots up in the attic of their old stone mansion. All the headshot photography was shot in one day with a three light set up.

I shoot quite a bit of corporate advertising photography for clients in the DC area. Images of the product are important but so is the service that the people who make up the company provide. How do you photograph service? It’s not an unimportant question. Employees provide services and as such sometimes Images of your people can be more powerful than images of your product. Getting the client to understand your people is just as important as getting them to understand the quality in your products. Photographing your employees on site in context is the best way to go about getting images like these . If you don’t think your staff is”photogenic enough consider that none of these people are models. Given the proper time and access, we can easily deliver images like these for your marketing department.

Ocracoke North Carolina Photography

Suzie and I drove down to Ocracoke last week.(Hint, this post is a little late, it wasn’t last week) I’d never been, wasn’t really expecting much. boy was I wrong about that. We decided to spend Sat night in Elizabeth City on the Intracoastal Waterway. I’m always looking for old large format cameras in antique shops.  Elizabeth City has a cool antique shop called the Treasure Hunter, Milton Sawyer owns it and he welcomed us in to look around. I’d already seen an old enlarger in the window so, I was feeling hopeful. Milton showed me the usual collection of small Kodak’s etc. Then he said he had something bigger but that wasn’t a really a camera, and he showed me a 5×7 Ansco on a wheeled stand. I couldn’t believe my eyes. the same camera my father used in 1948. I had to buy it, best part-$50. We ended up chatting with Milton for quite a while out front of his shop, The Treasure Hunter. if you are in the area, you should stop in.

Corporate advertising photography for Columbia maryland based Brightkey. We shot headshots of the executives and some general advertising images to be used for marketing collateral. Brightkey started out as a mailing and distribution service company, today they provide services as a call center with outbound telemarketing, warehousing and many other services. We spent a couple days on-site shooting different aspects of their business. Located in Columbia Maryland working out of their large warehouse spaces, they are a great group of people to work with and a lot of fun to shoot.

Wine Tasting Event Photography in Washington DC

I enjoy shooting event photography, typically I’ll bring a couple of mono lights on stands and move them around the room. I like have as much light as I need, especially for cross light effects. Sometimes of course it gets a little much say in a crowded room or if I’m moving from room to room. Then of course I shoot with smaller strobe flashes. Recently did some event photography for the American Heart Association at an event in Washington DC. Heart Health was held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. A three day wine and food event that included a wine auction, cooking classes and wine and food lectures. Here are a few images from the Master Wine Class.

Event Photography in Washington DC, 1920’s Flapper Party

Photography never gets boring so don’t get me wrong, I love every kind of photography. But theme style and event photography has to be one of my favorite types. This 1920’s flapper party in Baltimore was a lot of fun to photograph. It was a very creative 25 year anniversary party to which I brought a couple of mono lights and simply left one in each room and walked around and shot. I did have to move them from time to time and of course be careful no one tripped on the cords and every time I moved them, I had to re-calibrate the exposure and make sure i liked the lighting but other than that they were no trouble at all.

Corporate photography and marketing images

As a commercial photographer in Washington DC, I shoot a lot of images that are a combination of portrait and marketing photography. The kind of images that says there’s someone who looks knowledgeable, friendly and approachable, qualities you generally want in a marketing image. Most people are proud of the job they do, if you give them a little time its not hard to capture that in the image. Commercial Portrait and advertising photography that shows how proud employees are of the work they do are really valuable. Stock images are pretty easy for clients to recognize in addition to the fact other businesses may be using the same ones. Good images of your own people builds credibility and helps your clients get to know you as a business. The right kind of marketing image can say volumes about your business without you even picking up a pen.

Headshot Photography for design firm in Georgetown

Corporate Photography in Georgetown.

Recently I did a shoot for Marshall Moya Design. They are well known architecture and design firm located in the Georgetown. They want to update their website with a new modern look and asked me to shoot their employee’s headshots in black and white. A great group of mostly young, talented people they wanted something a little different,  not too business like for their site. As a group they were a lot of fun, we got many so great images it was hard to decide. I had a a great time shooting for these folks.

Portrait lighting tips and tricks

How to shoot portrait lighting

You don’t need diagrams about the inverse square law. You’ll only need a digital camera, two radio transmitters and two strobes. It helps to have an umbrella and a large-ish softbox. If you can afford the grid for the softbox, buy it. Lastly, go to home Depot and buy a white drop cloth, for about 6 bucks, made of a white shiny material. Unfold and place at the feet of your subject.

Setting up the lights for portrait photography.
If you are going for a dark background, leave a lot of empty space behind the subject. Chose a faster shutter speed, say 1/160.  If you want a light background use a white wall and less space behind the subject.  Then you can go with a slower shutter speed, say about 1/60. Set the soft box up close to the subject, either to the left or right. Set the other strobe 3 feet farther away, other side, same power setting.  I typically shoot with a 70 mm for portrait work.

Camera Settings
Place the camera in manual mode, take a few test shots. Adjust the F stop until the strobes are properly exposed for the subject’s face.  Changing the shutter speed will make the background lighter or darker, try it and decide which you want. If lighter and you turn the shutter slower than say 1/160, then use a tripod. Move the main light and the fill around a bit and experiment. Play around, change your settings no one thing is right. Make the light brush past the subject, not blast them. Change things a little by little and see what you like, you cant break anything. If you get confused, turn off one light and play until you get that one right and then add the other. None of this is that complicated, go slow and you will get it. That’s about it, you will be amazed at the results if you follow these simple directions.

The tattooed lasy I shot with a soft box, the girl in the helo was shot with two mono lights and blue cto, the longhaired guy with a beauty dish and a bare mono light, the guy with missile was just a old vitar strobe. The NASA guy was shot by just opening the hanger door and letting some direct sunlight fall at his feet. It takes some practice, move the subect move the light, when its right, you’ll see it.

Event Photographer Washington DC

Event Photography Washington DC and Maryland

I am a event photographer in the Washington DC area shooting dinners, wedding, political events and corporate meetings. I also shoot for a number of hospitals, Med Star Southern Maryland being one. A few days ago, Southern Maryland hospital and emergency healthcare providers across the state had a mock disaster drill. SMH asks me to come in and photograph the event for them as they have done each year. From an event photographer’s perspective this one is a lot of fun. In this kind of Event photography, “disaster victims” get some pretty realistically gruesome makeup up while the hospital does a pretty realistic job of taking care of them. The disasters range from airplane crashes, train wrecks to chemical weapons attacks. They take the drills pretty seriously and there are a lot of people involved and the organisation and planning is considerable. Unfortunately this year  it snowed an and the EMC folks didn’t want to put that many people out on the icy roads and that meant SMH had to go with mannequins this year. ( I helped blow them up) and naturally I was worried the images wouldn’t be good as last year without the makeup, but I think they came out alright. This year the mock disaster was a chemical weapons attack, that’s one I hadn’t seen before and I enjoyed shooting the guys in the suits.
